Canada’s 2024 Changes for International Students: Key Updates
Canada is introducing crucial changes to its International Student Program starting in 2024. These updates affect financial requirements, work permits, and student protections. Here are the essential updates to note:
Changes to Canada’s International Student Program You Should Know
1. Higher Financial Requirements for Study Permit Applicants
Starting January 1, 2024, the amount of money international students must show for their Study Permit applications will increase. It is to ensure students are financially prepared for life in Canada.
For 2024, a single applicant must prove they have CAD 20,635, plus tuition and travel expenses. It is double the previous amount of CAD 10,000, which had not changed in years.
2. Work Permits for International Students Extended
International students in Canada or applying for a Study Permit by December 7, 2023, can continue working off-campus beyond the usual 20-hour limit.
This exemption will remain in place until April 30, 2024. After this date, there may be a possibility of allowing students to work up to 30 hours per week, but this is still being discussed.
3. End of Distance Learning for Work Permits
Since 2020, time spent studying through distance learning counted toward a student’s eligibility for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
This rule applies to students starting their programs before September 1, 2024. However, those starting after this date won’t be able to include distance learning in their PGWP eligibility.
4. No More Extra 18-Month Work Permit for Graduates
During the pandemic, graduates whose PGWPs were expiring could get an extra 18 months of work permission. This policy ended in 2023 and will not be renewed in 2024.
5. Stronger Measures Against Fraud
To reduce fraud, starting December 1, 2023, all students must have their acceptance letters confirmed by the institution directly with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It will help protect students from fake acceptance offers.
6. Priority Processing for Recognized Institutions
In 2024, Canada will start a new system for higher education institutions. IRCC will recognize schools exceeding international student standards. Students applying to these schools will get their applications processed faster.
7. Review of Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
IRCC is reviewing the PGWP rules to make sure they meet the needs of the Canadian job market. Changes to the PGWP program will be announced later in 2024.
